Peter Cantarow

BiographyPeter Cantarow, of West Hartford, died Sunday (May 30, 2004) at home. He was born in Hartford on April 11, 1906, the son of Dr. Joseph Cantarow and Helen Karp Cantarow. He attended local Hartford schools and graduated from Yale University, class of '27. He also attended the Hartford Art School and the Art Students' League in New York. He served in World War II, mostly overseas. He was the owner of Peter's Floor Covering in Hartford for 25 years. In his earlier days, he sold cartoons, did commercial art work and illustrated a book. In retirement, he concentrated on painting and exhibited his art work at various galleries in the greater Hartford area. His paintings are in private collections. He was a member of Temple Beth Israel and an honorary member of the Regents. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Freida; a daughter-in-law, Mary Cantarow; and four grandchildren, Joshua, Kristen, Jeremy and Madelyn; devoted nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and caring friends. He was predeceased by two sons, Joseph Frederick and Walter Daniel; a brother, Dr. Abraham Cantarow and a sister, Rose Tulin. Funeral services will be private. There will be no calling hours. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Beatman-Cantarow Fund in memory of Dr. Walter Cantarow at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 85 Gillett Street, Hartford, CT 06105, or to a charity of choice.
