Rosalie Amory Cheney was born in Manchester, Connecticut on 25 December 1906. She was the daughter of of Sara Otis Amory and Frank Dexter Cheney, Sr. She had four siblings: Frank Dexter Cheney Jr. (1905-1991); Amory Cheney Marshall (1909-1999); Hope Amory Cheney Talcott (1913-1940); and Edward Amory Cheney (1918-1971).

She married John Fiske. They had two children: Rosalie Fiske Johnson and John Fiske, Jr.

She attended Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. She and her husband founded the Manomet Bird Observatory. She was a co-author of the book, The Bread Baker's Manual, published in 1978 with co-author Joanne Koch Potee.
