BiographyCharles Boardman Smith (1811-1900) was the son of Normand and Mary Boardman Smith. He was raised in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1833, he started in business as a member of the firm of Smith, Hubbard & Co. in New Orleans, a branch of the Connecticut company. He then held an interest in the Hartford firm, then T. Smith & Co, which became Smith, Bourn & Co., upon the admission of Benjamin A. Bourn to the company. In 1843, a New York branch opened in New York under the name of T. Smith & Co., then Smith, Worthington & Co. In 1885, Olcott B. Colton was admitted to the firm of Smith, Bourn & Co., and after the death of Mr. Bourn in 1897, Colton and Smith purchased Bourn's interest of the company.
