Theodore Barrell

BiographyTheodore Barrell was born in Boston, Massachusetts on 9 March 1771 (his parents are unknown). He married Elizabeth Beckels Gall of Demerara, British Guinea (the sister of Mary Judith Gall Bnjamin Lanman) on 29 March 1800. Educated in England, he then went to sea. For a time he lived in the West Indies and Demerara, moving in 1806 to Norwich, Connecticut where he built his house. He later moved to New London, Connecticut, and still later to Saugerties, New York, where he died. On the reverse of the portrait the date of death is given as 22 May 1847, while The Connecticut Historical Society Jocelyn exhibition checklist gives his death date as 1845.
