Tashi Dhondup Sharzur, popularly known as Techung, is a Tibetan singer, instrumentalist, and composer based currently in the Albany area of New York State. Growing up in the Tibetan exile community in Dharamsala, India, he studied traditional music and dance and a variety of Tibetan performing art forms for 17 years at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, also touring with the group. After his arrival in the U.S., he founded the Tibetan opera performing company Chaksampa in San Francisco. Techung has continued his life in music and performance, creating and collaborating on solo and group albums and many musical ventures including film scores. He has been a regular performer at Connecticut’s TibetFest. He received a prestigious NYFA Fellowship in Folk and Traditional Arts in 2018.
