Mary Ann Araujo Monteiro (1942-1998) was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Joaquim "Jack" Araujo from São Nicolau, Cabo Verde and Anna Gomes from New Bedford, Massachusetts respectively. Her father was a well-known Cape Verdean musician who played guitar and mandolin with other Cape Verdean friends in the community and at Capo Verdean events around New England. Mary Ann grew up around Cape Verdean music, and she enjoyed singing.
