Amos Doolittle was born in Cheshire, CT and trained as a jeweler and silversmith. He taught himself engraving and produced a wide assortment of prints, including portraits, religious subjects, bookplates, tickets, invitations, maps, and book illustrations. His most famous and important works are his four views of the battles of Lexington and Concord, which he engraved and published in New Haven in 1775. His series of scenes from the life of the Prodigal Son were later reproduced as lithographs by the Kellogg brothers of Hartford. Doolittle died in New Haven in 1832.
