Hartford Saengerbund

BiographyA center for the German American community in central Connecticut, the Hartford Saengerbund operates a social club in Newington which is home to a singing society and a pub, and where members present concerts, festivals, holiday celebrations, and occasional exhibits such as the German costume collection displayed by Karin Gottier.

History from the Hartford Saengerbund website: “Founded in 1858, the Sängerbund has long been a significant contributor among German-American organizations in maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage. Having endured the consequences of the Civil War, two World Wars and the Depression years, the organization, originally based in Hartford, has made its home in Newington since 1966. At the heart of its activities are the Choral groups, which meet each Friday evening from September through June. The Men's, Ladies' and Mixed Choruses have won many awards in the Annual competition among similar groups throughout Connecticut and New England area. A brief history of the organization would not be complete without reference to such major events as the Bierfest and ChristkindlMarkts (Christmas Bazaars). Since 1984, Bierfests featuring bands from Germany have been a significant club activity. Held every other year, these festivals have been highly successful in bringing together the German-American community both locally and from throughout Connecticut in an atmosphere of congeniality and good fellowship. It is truly an international event as evidenced by the response of residents within the town of Newington. (Source: https://www.hartfordsaengerbund.org/index.html)
