Village Creek Homeowners Association

American, founded 1949
BiographyIn 1949, Roger Willcox, along with about thirty like-minded individuals purchased 69 acres of waterfront property in Norwalk, Connecticut, and founded Village Creek. The community was an experiment in open housing and inclusivity, during a time when housing was overwhelmingly segregated (VCA was refused any mortgage insurance by the Federal Housing Authority because of their open and accepting covenants.) Residents volunteered their skills and time to build homes, design public recreation spaces, establish childcare, organize community events, and rally together against big corporations who threatened the ecology of their waterfront. Village Creek still exists today, some residents having lived out their entire lives there.
