Houghton BulkeleyAmerican, 1896 - 1966

Houghton Bulkeley was born 9 August 1896 in Fenwick, Old Saybrook, Connecticut. He was the son of Fannie Briggs Houghton Bulkeley (1860-1938) and Governor Morgan G. Bulkeley (1837-1922), and the brother of Eleanor Houghton Bulkeley Ingersoll and Edward Bulkeley. He was educated at Yale University. He married twice; his second wife was Virginia Grover. He had two daughters, Mrs. Hope Bulkeley Friedberg and Nancy Houghton Bulkeley, with his first wife, and one son, Peter Bulkeley, with his second wife.

Houghton Bulkeley served with Company B, 101st Machine Gun Battalion, 26th Division in World War I. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1917. In Hartford, Connecticut, he served as Alderman from the old 10th Ward from 1925 to 1929. He was President of the Board of Aldermen from 1927-1929. He was a member of the military staff of Governors Hiram Bingham and John H. Trumbull, with the rank of Major from 1925-1933. Houghton Bulkeley was a member of the Connecticut River Bridge [Bulkeley Bridge] and Highway District Commission. He was appointed a trustee of the American School for the Deaf, 1953-1955, by Governor John Lodge. He served as chairman of the 11th Ward, Republican Committee, from 1945 to 1950.

In business, Houghton Bulkeley worked with Richter & Company in 1919, and from 1922-1943, he was a partner in the successor firm, Putnam & Company. He was a partner in Cooley & Company from 1943 until his retirement in 1953. He was a director of Connecticut Printers, Inc., president and director of the Fenwick Hall Company, president and trustee of the Gardner Bulkeley Cemetery Association, and a director of Cedar Hill Cemetery. He served the Borough of Fenwick as Treasurer from 1923-1927, and was Warden from 1947 until his death. Houghton Bulkeley died 3 May 1966 in Hartford, Connecticut. He is buried there, in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
