BiographyGeorge W. Avery (1836-1893) was born in Hampton, Connecticut to David Avery (1787-1875) and Rebecca Brown Morgan (1806-1896). He had three siblings: Hannah Chaplin Partridge (1831-1920), born in Chaplin, CT; John Smith Avery (1834-1858), purported to have been lost at sea; and Maria Howard Avery (1845-1890), born in Hampton, CT.

Dr. George W. Avery graduated from Yale Medical School after the Civil War. During the Civil War, he served as assistant surgeon with the Ninth Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. In 1863, he became surgeon of the First Regiment New Orleans Volunteers, and remained there until 1866. After the Civil War, he practiced medicine in Hartford.

Dr. Avery married Lydia Leffingwell Shipman (1846-1883) in 1872, and they had one daughter, Helen Shipman Avery (1877-1948). In 1884, after Lydia's death, George married Elizabeth Porter Keep (1851-1910). They had three children: Mary Elizabeth Avery (1885-1962), Alice Porter Avery (1887-1966), and Melanie Avery (1891-1955). They lived in Farmington and Hartford.
