Olga Alfaro de Mele was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Pedro and Ramona (Gutierrez) Alfaro and lived in the Hartford area since 1941. She was married to John Mele. In 1977, she received the Jefferson Award for her community work from the American Institute for Public Service in Washington, DC. In 1985, she was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal from Pope John Paul II for her outstanding contribution to Church and Society. In 1980, she received a Special Distinction Award from President Carter at the White House. In 1989, she was awarded the Fray Bartolomei de Las Casas Award by the Northeast Hispanic Center in New York City. In 1996, she was awarded the Marcus Garvey Award and the Joseph Donnelly Memorial Award. In 1975, she was awarded the Symbol of Hispanic Woman Award, the Latinos Unidos Award, Puerto Rican Matriarch in 1974, La Casa de Puerto Rico Community Service Award in 1990, the South Green Community Service Award in 1975, and the Maria Sanchez Community Award in 1990.
