Elinor (Righter) Oakes was born 16 January 1912 in Plainfield, New Jersey, and grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Walter and Eva Foster Righter.

She married Thomas F. Oakes, and they had two daughters: Leslie Oakes and Nora Oakes.

She was a member of the Miss Porter's School Class of 1929, and served 18 months in Italy during World War II, attached to the Red Cross and Air Force.

She died April 15, 2001 at Bridgeport Hospital.
