Yung Shang Him

Chinese, born 1863
BiographyBorn in Nanping, Xiangshan County, Guangdong Province in 1863, Yung Shang Him was a student of the Chinese Educational Mission. Yung Shang Him was the nephew of Yung Wing.

He attended Hartford Public High School and resided in the United States from 1872 through late 1874, in Springfield, MA; Hartford and New Haven, CT. Yung was hosted by the families of Dr. A.S. McLean and Julia and Kate Burbank (Hartford, CT).

Upon returning to China, Him was assigned to Fuzhou Naval School and later became a Navy Captain in a number of capacities, including the Sino-French naval battle in 1884, and the Sino-Japanese War 1894-5 (aboard the "Huan Tai" in the Nanyang Squadron). Him served as a U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou in 1899, and in 1905 he was hired by Yuan Shikai as a Shipping Manager.

Yung Shang Him died in Shanghai in May, 1954.
