Julio Kilenyi

Hungarian, 1885 - 1959
BiographyJulio Kilenyi (21 Feb. 1885 - 29 Jan. 1959), whose original name was Kilenyi Gyula, was born in Arad, Hungary. He studied at the Royal Art School in Budapest, Hungary, in Paris, and in Berlin. He immigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1907, where he lived for nine years. He then immigrated to New York in 1916, and in 1924 became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

He was a medallic sculptor. He designed and sculpted many commemorative medals for government and corporations. He conducted work for presidential inaugurations and the first transatlantic flight. He worked for the Medallic Art Company and for L. G. Balfour (where he served as art director from 1949-1955). He was known for taking on commercial work.
