Quinebaug Company

American, 1851 - 1932
BiographyThe Quinebaug Company began in 1851 with the purchase of the Danielson Manufacturing Company's cotton mill by Amos D. Lockwood and his associates from Providence, Rhode Island. The mill was situated along the Quinebaug River, and had been built in 1820 by Comfort Tiffany. In 1864, the Quinebaug Company built a second mill in Danielson, this one made out of stone. By 1889, the company had seen enough success -- its mills producing 3 million yards of cloth per year -- to employ over 800 people, and constructed 200 tenements to accommodate them. In 1932 under the stewardship of James Arthur Atwood, the Quinebaug Company merged with the Wauregan Company to form the Wauregan-Quinebaug Company. In 1942, the Quinebaug mills were sold to U.S. Rayon while Atwood retained the Wauregan site.
