Shubel Smith

American, 1775 - 1823
BiographyShubel Smith was born 14 February 1775, the son of Charles of Colchester and Hannah (Stewart) Smith of Waterford. He married Sarah Raymond on 17 April 1796; and they lived in Ledyard at the "Smith Homstead" on Pumpkin Hill Road, which he built in 1807. They had eleven children: Shubel Raymond Smith (1797-1820); Charles Edward Smith (1799-1802); Sally Raymond Smith (b. 1802); Charles Edward Smith (1803-1828); Hannah Emeline Smith (1806-1870); Leonard Christophers Smith (1808-1870); Jared Whitfield Smith (b. 1810); Harriet Lines Smith (1812-1846) (married Noyes P. Denison in 1830); Orlando Smith (1814-1859)(married Emeline Gallup in 1845, daughter of Isaac Gallup, Esq. and Prudence Geer of Ledyard); Eliza Ann Smith (1816-1882); and Julia Abby Smith (1819-1900).
In addition to managing his farm he carried on quite an extensive business of buying and shipping mules to the South and to the West Indies. He died in Groton on 3 March 1823 aged 48.
