BiographyFlorence Sidette Marcy Crofut, the only child of Lucy Marcy Crofut (1848-1937) and Sidney Winter Crofut (1840-1935) was born on 28 May 1875. Sidney Crofut served as bank commissioner under three governors, and he was an officer of the bank known as the Society for Savings. Florence Crofut graduated from Danielson High School (now Killingly) in 1893; she was the class valedictorian. She also graduated from Wellesley College, class of 1897, where she earned a master's degree in philosophy and German. In 1938, she was honored with an M.A. degree from Trinity College in Hartford.

In 1901, Miss Crofut's parents moved into a house at 25 No. Beacon Street in Hartford; this became Miss Crofut's lifelong home. From 1928 through 1937 she researched and wrote a "Guide to the History and Historic Sites of Connecticut," which was published by the Yale University Press in 1937. Florence Crofut was an active member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of Connecticut and she served as the fourth regent of the Ruth Wyllis Chapter, Daughters fo the American Revolution, 1913-1921. She served as chariman of the Chapter Committee on Preservation and Restoration of the Old State House, Hartford, which included its renovation and visitor program in the late 1950's. Later, she served on the State House Committee of The Connecticut Historical Society from 1962 until her death. As a member of the Colonial Dames, she researched and restored the Gentleman's Library in the historic Webb House in Wethersfield. She also gathered and catalogued Lutheran church records from older state parishes for the Connecticut State Library. In 1940, she was appointed Recording Secretary of the Connecticut Historical Society where she served until her death in 1974 at the age of 98.
