Connecticut Humane Society

American, founded 1881
BiographyThe Connecticut Humane Society was first founded in 1881 by Gertrude O. Lewis, a Hartford High School senior, who stood up to the poor treatment of children, livestock, wildlife, companion animals, and animals used in the workplace and in sport. Until the State of Connecticut created the Department of Children and Families in 1965, the Connecticut Humane Society was the only statewide organization offering protective services to children.
At this time, the focus shifted to animals, particularly to companion animals. Ther are several branch offices and shelters around the state, even a mobile adoption center that was purchased in 2003. The group continues to contribute to the welfare of animals and serve the needs of the community.
