Eleazar WheelockAmerican, 1711 - 1779

Eleazar Wheelock was born 22 April 1711 in Windham, Connecticut. He was the son of Deacon Ralph and Ruth (Huntington) Wheelock of Norwich. An ordained minister, he founded Moore's Charity School in 1755 in Lebanon, Connecticut for the conversion and education of Native Americans. Wheelock later re-organized this school and obtained a charter for Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1769 of which he became the first president. He was married twice: first to Sarah (Davenport) Maltby with whom he had 6 children and second to Mary Brinsmade with whom he had 5 children. He died 24 April 1779 in Hanover, New Hampshire.
