John Phillips

John Phillips was born 27 December 1719 in Andover, Massachusetts, the son of Reverend Samuel and Hannah (White) Phillips. John entered Harvard before the age of 12 and received his M.A. four years later in 1735. He married twice, first to Sarah (Emery) Gilman and then to the widow of Dr. Eliphalet Hale. John Phillips founded Phillips Academy in 1781 in Andover, Massachusetts and Phillips Exeter Academy in 1783 in Exeter, New Hampshire. He was a trustee of Dartmouth College. He died in Andover, Massachusetts on 21 April 1795.
