Italian-American, 1913 - 2004
BiographyJosef Scalyea was born in northern Italy, but grew up in South Glastonbury, Connecticut, working in his parents' peach orchard. He studied photographty in New York City during the 1930s. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and photographed missions over Japan, Okinawa, and Philippines. Following the war, he settled in the Pacific Northwest. For many years he was chief photographer for the Seattle Times. He died on July 21, 2004.
