DescriptionWaistcoat with a red wool broadcloth front and collar. It is double-breasted with 26 small silver buttons, and it is embellished with silver-wrapped thread embroidery of leaves within straight, narrow lines (created by closely laid diagonal stitches) along the edges of the waistcoat opening, bottom, and collar. The buttons have edges that are slightly serrated. The collar stands straight, about 1 3/4 inches high. A short and wide revers below the collar is edged with silver embroidery. Two pockets are also embellished with embroidery.

The waistcoat back is plain-woven linen (possibly with some cotton) of a rather heavy weight. This same fabric also makes up the lining. Side panels of red twill-woven wool are stitched between the red broadcloth and the backing fabric. To make the garment larger, it was split up the middle of the back, and an insertion of similar cotton fabric was added. The original back ties of the waistcoat are torn off.
Object number1896.9.2
NotesObject Note: The waistcoat was probably owned in the period from the end of the Revolutionary War to the 1790s.
