DescriptionEcru and yellow silk flowers are mounted flat on this nearly flat, round hat. A green velvet ribbon bow is mounted in the back, and the entire top of the hat is covered with green net. The crown is slightly rounded and slopes up in front to form a small brim (there is no brim in the back); two small, triangular extensions curve down on the sides of the hat. The crown is lined with an ecru synthetic fabric, and edged with yellow grosgrain ribbon with an applied brown picot edge. The brim is lined with a different ecru synthetic fabric.
The carboard hat box is round and covered in white paper on the top, printed in black with a coat of arms: a shield with three hoop-skirted ladies carrying hat boxes in a triangular arrangement, with pistol below and two pistols above (probably a reference to Hartford's Colt firearms industry), the shield surmounted by the head of a knight and a flaming rook design. On either side of the shield is printed: "HARTFORD." and "CONNECTICUT." Below the shield, within an undulating ribbon is printed "HOPKINS". The edge of the box top is covered in black paper. The sides of the box bottoms are covered with black and white diagonally striped paper. Two handles of black silk-like cording are mounted within metal eyelets.
