DescriptionPair of raised silver chalices, or goblets, from a Communion service. Each chalice has a slightly flared rim, curved sides, and a plain stem that flares down to a round foot. Each chalice is engraved just below the rim, "Derby Church/ 1804". Each stem is soldered onto the bowl of the chalice. Each foot has a narrow milled border of small beads soldered onto the bottom edge.
NotesHistorical Note: Records from the First Congregational Church of Derby, as printed in the Sotheby's sale catalog, indicate that the set of six cups (of which 2006.4.0.1-.2 are two) was obtained by exchanging or selling the Church's older plate. The records read: "At a meeting of the Chh July 22d 1804 Voted To sell one Flagon & the cups formerly used by the Chh and that Deac. Holbrook Deacon Tomlinson M r John Howd & M r J. Smith be a committee to dispose of them to the best advantage for the Chh - and that any two of s d com - be authorized to complete a contract for the same." (Hudson 2/7/2006)
