DescriptionAn elderly man is seated on the grass beside a stream or pond. He wears a coat, vest, breeches, hose, and shoes with buckles. He holds a fishing pole which droops and touches the water. He appears to be asleep. A black and white dog, possibly a setter, lies curled asleep beside him. A covered picnic basket and a napkin are on the ground at the left. Four children are on a crumbling stone wall behind the man. Two children, a boy and a girl, hold fishing poles. The boy at the far left has hooked the man's top hat with his pole. The girl has hooked the man's wig or toupe. The wall of a building and trees are in the left background. Additional trees, fields, and distant hills are in the right background.
