DescriptionA woman is seated in a carved and upholstered chair. She wears a dress with lace and a ribbon tied in a bow at her throat, and two bracelets. She has a comb in her hair. Her left index finger is inserted between the pages of small paper-backed book. With a flat stick, she points to the text in a picture book held by a young child, who wears a dress and pantaloons. The illustration depicts a crouching animal, probably a dog. A second child, a girl, leans on the back of a chair nearby. A shawl or blanket rests on the chair. Drapery hang from a window at the far left. Papers and a wooden box with a hinged lid containing a ribbon [?] are on a table covered with a patterned tablecloth at the right. A patterned carpet, floorcloth, or matting is on the floor.
