DescriptionSampler worked in light green, dark brown, medium blue, light brown and medium green silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground in cross stitches. The sampler is squarish, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with six rows of three alphabets, the numbers 1 through 9 and an inscription, over two inscriptions. The first inscription is "Simsbury.July.12.1817.". The second inscription is "Religion is the chief concern/ Of mortals here below/ May i its great importance learn/ Its sovereign virtue know". The third inscription is "WELTHA GOODrich."; "GOODrich." encroaches the right border. The sampler has a four-sided narrow border.
The sampler has a 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all four sides. The sampler is not framed or permanently mounted; it is accompanied by an old frame. It is encased in a covered mat.
Letters and Numbers: There are three alphabets and the numbers 1-9. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1, lowercase block in alphabet 2, and uppercase script in alphabet 3. The letter J is present in all alphabets; the letter U is present in alphabets 1 and 2. Alphabets 2 and 3 end at the letter Y. Maker uses long 's'.
