DescriptionMarking sampler worked in dark brown, medium brown, light blue, medium blue, and dull salmon silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with four rows of two partial alphabets, over an inscription, which is flanked by two marking motifs. Certain lines of alphabets are separated by straight narrow borders. There is a four-sided narrow border. The sampler is unfinished.

The sampler has a 2/8-inch double-turned hem on all four edges. The sampler is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are two partial alphabets. The letters are uppercase script in alphabet 1 and lowercase block in alphabet 2. The letter J is not present in either alphabet; the letter U is present in the first alphabet. All lowercase letters with descenders, such as the letter 'g', are placed so the descender does not extend below the baseline.

Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitches over two threads.

Condition: The ground has darkened and stained, especially in the top half. The ground has three areas of wear near the center. The sampler has light to moderate fading. The sampler is not framed.
