DescriptionMarking sampler worked in dark blues, dark brown, and light brown silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches over two threads. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with three rows of one alphabet, over a group of letters at the bottom. The lines of alphabets are separated by narrow straight borders. There is a four-sided narrow border.

The sampler has a 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all four edges. The sampler is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There is one alphabet plus five additional individual letters. The letters are uppercase block in the alphabet. The letters J and U are not present. The additional letters are uppercase H and uppercase block JEPZ. There are two other letters that resemble the letter H, though they differ from the H in the alphabet.

Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitches over two threads.

Condition: There is some stitch loss, primarily to the horizontal lines separating the alphabets. The ground has yellowed and has stains at the right side. The sampler is not framed.
