DescriptionSampler worked in light blues, rust, dark gray, light gray, black, light brown, and fuchsia silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground in cross stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented vertically. It is laid out with eleven rows of three alphabets, two sets of the numbers 1 through 7, and an inscription. The inscription is "Sarah J Latimers Sampler"; "Sampler" encroaches the right border. The lines of alphabets, numbers and text are separated by various narrow borders, including straight and meandering lines. The sampler has a four-sided narrow border.
The sampler is attached to a paper backing. It probably has a double-turned hem. The sampler is not framed. It is encased in a covered mat.
Letters and Numbers: There are three alphabets and two sets of the numbers 1-7. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1, lowercase block in alphabet 2, and uppercase script in alphabet 3. The letters J and U are present in all alphabets. Each letter in the first uppercase alphabet is repeated twice. The second uppercase alphabet is larger than the other two alphabets. The first set of numbers is separated as 1, 2-5 and 67. The second set of numbers is separated as 1 and 2-7. "Sampler" is worked as "Sample" with the "r" placed immediately above the "e".
Stitches: The sampler was worked in cross stitch (over two) and cross stitch over one.
Condition: The sampler is attached with small red stitches in cotton thread to a paper backing. The sampler is not framed. It is encased in a covered mat.
