DescriptionNeedlework picture worked in medium brown, dark and medium grey, dark medium and light green, dark medium and light blue, yellow, white and red silk thread, paint, and sequins on a cream-colored satin-woven silk ground, using satin stitch and other stitches. The needlework picture is rectangular oriented horizontally. In the center is an oval cartouche containing a scene of a boy, holding a shepheard's crook, sitting on a hill by a small lake or stream with a dog and two sheep. The boy's face, the sky and water are hand-painted in blues, black, grey and flesh tones directly onto the silk ground. The cartouche is outlined with dark grey sequins. This is surrounded by an oval border of roses on a thorny vine with leaves and ribbon tied in a bow at the top.
The silk ground is nailed to the edges of the original rectangular wooden stretcher. The frame and matting are missing.
Stitches: The principal stitch on the needlework picture is satin stitch; it also includes encroaching satin, long and short, and french knot.
Condition: The silk thread has moderate overall fading. The ground is lightly stained and discolored at the edges; it is yellowed overall. The frame and matting are missing.
