DescriptionFamily register worked in yellow and orange silk threads on a dark green, plain-woven linen ground using cross stitch over two threads. The sampler is rectangular, oriented vertically. It is laid out with two rows of two alphabets, over seven rows of family details. The lines are separated by straight or meandering horizontally stitched rows. There are four small diamonds after alphabet 2. There is a four-sided plain border; the bottom border is not complete.
The sampler has a 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all four edges. At all four edges on the wrong side of the sampler is paper residue, evidence that it was probably glued to a surface. The sampler is not framed.
Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets. Alphabet 1 is uppercase block, alphabet 2 is lowercase block. The letters "J" and "U" are present in alphabet 1. In alphabet 2, the letter "j" is missing, while the letter "u" is present. The letters "YZ" of alphabet 1 are continued at the end of alphabet 2 in line 2.
Stitches: The sampler was done in cross stitch (over two).
Condition: The ground has several visible weak areas, some of which have developed into holes. The sampler has moderate fading. It is not framed or mounted.
