DescriptionSampler worked in light brown, medium green, black, light blue-green, pink, rust, and cream silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross and other stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented vertically. It is laid out with seven rows of two alphabets, the numbers 1 through 9, and the initials "LG", over three inscriptions. The first inscription is "LGood". The second inscription is "Lovina Good/ of New London/ Her Exampler/ Made In The Ninth Year of/ Her Age 1801". The second inscription is contained in a cartouche; this is flanked by small flowers and diagonal lines. The third inscription is "Groton August/ The Fourth/ 1801". There are initials IG, AG, and LG. Certain lines of alphabets and numbers are separated by various narrow borders, including straight and meandering lines. The four-sided border is denoted by hem stitching and pulled thread work.
There is a 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all of the edges. The sampler is not framed.
Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets and the numbers 1-9. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1 and uppercase script in alphabet 2. The letter J is present in the first alphabet only; it is backwards. The letter U is not present in either alphabet.
Stitches: The principal stitch on the sampler is cross stitch over two threads; it is also worked in hem, Algerian eye, closed herringbone, cross over one thread, and rice stitches.
Condition: The sampler has light to severe fading, depending on the color. It is not framed.
