DescriptionMarking sampler worked in medium blue-green, light blue green, dark brown, and light brown silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with six rows of three alphabets, and the numbers 1 through 10. There are some small cross and "x" designs. There is no border.

The sampler has a 1/8-inch double-turned hem on all four edges. The sampler is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are three alphabets plus five additional letters, and the numbers 1-10. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1, lowercase block in alphabet 2, and lowercase script in alphabet 3. The letter J is present in the first and second alphabets; the letter U is present in all alphabets. The additional letters are upper and lowercase block, AUWjh. The letter M is repeated twice in the first alphabet; the letters "s", "v", and "z" are repeated twice in the second alphabet. The embroiderer uses the long 's'. All lowercase letters with descenders, such as the letter 'g', are placed so the descender does not extend below the baseline.

Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitch over two threads.

Condition: The sampler has a visible horizontal crease in its center. There are some stains. The sampler has minimal fading. The sampler is not framed.
