DescriptionMarking sampler worked in medium green, salmon, light blue, gray-brown, and black silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground in cross stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with six rows of three alphabets and an inscription, over two rows of one alphabet, the numbers 1 through 10, and an inscription. The first inscription is "A. Lhommodieu". The second inscription is "1828". The lines of alphabets and text are separated by various narrow straight borders. There is a narrow four-sided border.

The sampler has a 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all four edges. It is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are four alphabets and the numbers 1-10. The letters are uppercase block in alphabets 1 and 3, uppercase script in alphabet 2, and lowercase block in alphabet 4. The letter J is present in the second, third and fourth alphabets; the letter U is present in all alphabets. The first alphabet ends at the letter F; the second alphabet ends at the letter W. The letters "g" and "s" are repeated in the last alphabet. The embroiderer uses the long 's'.

Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitches over two threads; it is also worked in cross stitches over one thread. There are some miscellaneous lime green threads at the bottom of the sampler. The color black is used for only one stitch.

Condition: The sampler has at least one worn area in the last alphabet. It has light to moderate fading. The sampler is not framed.
