DescriptionMarking sampler worked in dark brown silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground in cross stitches (over two threads). The sampler is squarish, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with four rows of two alphabets, the numbers 1 through 10, and the letters EC. Certain lines of alphabets, numbers and text are separated by various narrow straight borders. The sampler has a four-sided border. The sampler is unfinished.
The sampler has a 1/8 to 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all four edges. The sampler is not framed.
Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets plus two additional individual letters, and the numbers 1-10. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1, and uppercase and lowercase block in alphabet 2. The additional letters are uppercase script: EC. The letters J and U are present in both alphabets. The number 10 is presented as 01.
Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitch (over two threads).
Condition: The sampler has extensive staining. It has minimal fading. The sampler is not framed. It is unfinished.
