NotesCostume Note: Sitter wears a wrap-around kerchief typical of the period (early 1790s). Her tight, smooth bodice and sleeves are likewise typical of the period, though the flowers in her hair are not typically seen in portraits of the period. (Bassett 3/19/2002)

Historical Note: Rufus Hitchcock (1760-1832), the husband of Hannah Lewis Hitchcock, was the first cousin once removed of furniture maker Lambert Hitchcock (1795-1852). Rufus Hitchcock's father, Eliakim Hitchcock, was the brother of Lambert Hitchcock's grandfather, John Hitchcock. (Johnson and Hudson 8/8/2005)
