DescriptionRectangular, cream-colored whiteware ashtray with gilding and a black, green, and brown transfer decoration. The center of the ashtray has a rectangular well, with an image of vertical green boards. Superimposed over the boards is a slender black metal revolver with a brown wood handle. To the left is a sign that reads, "COLT .44/ MODEL 1860". The well is surrounded by the raised rectangular rim of the ashtray. Each end of the ashtray has three semi-circular indentations in the rim. A band of gilding is applied at the edge of the well. Much of the gilding has worn away. The left lower edge of the ashtray has a chip.
NotesSubject Note: The Colt Model 1860 Army revolver was manufactured from 1860 through 1873. The total production consisted of more than 200,000 guns. The six-shot, .44 caliber revolver was the primary handgun used by Union troops during the Civil War because of its reliability. (Hunt 5/26/2005)
