DescriptionThree-quarter-length seated portrait of a woman wearing a long dress with a wide neckline, balloon sleeves, and undersleeves. Her only jewelry is long pendant earrings in each ear. She holds a sheet of paper, presumably a letter, to her breast with both hands. She rests her left arm on the arm of her chair. Tall stalks of flowers, probably hollyhocks, and a tree trunk are in the right background. In the left background are a house, a tree, another small building, and a willow tree.
