DescriptionFigured-flask made of mold-blown olive green glass. The figured flask has a plain lip, a short cylindrical neck, rounded shoulders that curve down to tapered sides, a flattened body, and a smoothed pontil mark and a shallow kick on the bottom. Both sides of the flask have different raised decoration. On one side is the raised profile bust of a man, facing right, below the arched name, "LAFAYETTE". Below the profile is the raised arched word, "COVENTRY" over, "C-T". On the opposite side are nine raised stars above a raised oval containing a pointed cap on a vertical stick. Below the oval are the letters, "S & S". The bottom edge of the figured flask has a ring of light scratches and one chip.

NotesHistorical Note: The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) returned to the United States in 1824 and embarked on a tour of the states. His visit was the occasion for this and many other objects carrying his name or image. The small pointed cap on a stick is the French liberty cap. (Hunt 5/4/2005)
