The jar has a painted tin lid with a domed top and cylindrical sides; a round piece of fabric hangs down from the inside of the lid. The jar contains a large disc-shaped fragment of wood and some dirt. One side of the jar, below the shoulder, has a narrow rectangular piece of paper adhered to the surface of the glass. Hand-written ink words on the label read, "[obscured] the Night Blooming Cereus/ 1852". The hand-written label is nearly brown and has very rough edges.
