DescriptionRectangular bottle case made of wood boards joined with iron nails. The sides of the case (.a) are rabbeted into the longer front and back boards; the thin bottom board of the case is attached with a butt joint. The interior is divided into twelve equal sections by two long and three shorter thin pieces of wood that fit into notches on the interior walls. Each end of the case has one iron loop handle attached with two cotter pins. The remnants of an iron lock remain on the inside of the front of the box, near the top edge. The hinges were attached on the opposite side of the case, at the top. The left hinge is now missing, leaving a squared 'U'-shaped notch in the wood visible, but portions of the right, wrought iron strap hinge are still present. Near the right hinge, on the exterior, are the remnants of a leather strap hinge with iron nails. On the left side of the right end of the case are the incised letters "TVR" above the numbers "79". These numbers are preceded by a number "1" or an elongated apostrophe. The interior bottom of the case has numerous small holes, indicative of previous insect damage. The bottom board has split into three pieces of wood.
The lid (.b) consists of a single board with a thin beveled strip of wood on the left side, attached with iron nails. Iron nails also project from the front, and there are nail holes on the right side, indicating that these sides had a beveled strip of wood (now missing). The remnant of an iron strap hinge is visible on the right underside of the lid. The remnants of a leather strap hinge with iron nails are visible on the top, near the right hinge. The number "A1655", the old accession number, is punched and incised into the right front top of the lid.
Both the lid and case have remnants of more than one layer of paint; the topmost layer consists of dark paint. The right front of the case has a long streak of an unknown white substance. The back left corner has also been exposed to the same substance. All sides of the case have flakes of white paint. All of the painted surfaces are flaking.
