DescriptionCylindrical, Chinese export porcelain teapot with gilded decoration and an oval containing the initials "JEB". The style of the teapot reflects the Federal, or neoclassical, style popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

The teapot (.b) is cylindrical with a round rim, a squared shoulder, and a recessed bottom. At one side of the teapot there is a straight, tapered spout. Opposite the spout is a handle consisting of two pieces of extruded porcelain that are twisted together; each end of each piece of extruded porcelain attaches to the body of the teapot. A molded and applied cluster of decoration is found at each of the four points where the handle joins the body. Each side of the body between the handle and spout is hand-painted in gold with the initials "JAB" inside an oval. Additional gilding is painted at the rim and on the handle.

The lid (.a) is round, with a molded and applied finial in the shape of a berry and small leaves. There is a hole through the lid at one side of the finial. The finial is decorated with gilding. A line of gilding is painted around the edge of the lid. The top of the lid has one dark spot, the result of an impurity in the porcelain.

Condition: A fine, horizontal crack is located underneath the spout. The exterior surface of the teapot is lightly speckled, and possibly stained. The gilding on the teapot is well worn, especially on the handle and finial.
