NotesHistorical Note: The Bulkeley family crypt in Colchester, Connecticut, was closed up in the early 1830s when it became full. The crypt was eventually forgotten, until May 2002, when workers installing a fence around the cemetery uncovered a large stone with the words "Tomb of Gershom Bulkeley and his Descendants." During the summer of 2002, Connecticut State Archaeologist Nick Bellantoni conducted an excavation of the crypt, and his team removed the skeletal remains of Gershom Bulkeley and 27 of his descendants. Family members who were placed in the crypt had died between 1775 and 1832. Rhoda Jones Kellogg Bulkeley (1750-1807) was Gershom Bulkeley's daughter in law; she married his son, Major Roger Bulkeley (1751-1819).
