DescriptionView of Meriden, Connecticut, looking north toward the "Hanging Hills," part of the Metacomet Ridge running from Northampton, Massachusetts, to New Haven, Connecticut. The Quinnipiac River is in the foreground, and there are two men talking by the edge of a dirt road. One of the men wears a red jacket and is seated on a horse, while the other man wears a blue jacket and is seated on an outcropping of rocks. In the middle ground, dwellings and mill buildings are visible on Main Street. The background features wooded hills and stone cliffs. Atop West Peak, a resort hotel flying a large United States flag is visible. Traprock ridges found in the area are visible near the top of the hills.

The painting is in a period gilt frame.
NotesSubject Note: The resort hotel that is visible is Hill's West Peak House, a resort hotel which operated from about 1853-1866. The hotel boasted a large telescope allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular view afforded by the 1,000-foot-high peak (now part of Hubbard Park).
