DescriptionBlown and cut colorless lead glass smelling bottle with stopper, with an attached sterling silver cap. The smelling bottle (.a) has a narrow neck, a sloping shoulder, and twelve cut sides that taper to a fine point at the bottom. The neck of the smelling bottle is covered with a sterling silver cap, and the interior of the neck is ground to receive a stopper.
The cap consists of a curved cylindrical neck topped by a flat disc. The neck is decorated with a pattern of white enamel flowers over a green enamel background. The disc is decorated with a circle of small beads surrounding a band of the same green and white enamel decoration as on the neck. There is a small red jewel, possibly a garnet, in the center of the disc. The cap flips open by means of a hinge that connects the neck with the disc. On the neck, below the hinge, is a small projecting ring intended to connect to a chain (now missing). The silver is slightly tarnished.
The smelling bottle is accompanied by a very small glass stopper (.b) that consists of a trapezoid-shaped finial over a ground tapered portion that fits into the neck of the smelling bottle.
