DescriptionGrey, salt-glazed stoneware lidded butter churn with a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The churn (.a) has a flared rim, two raised bands at the neck, a cylindrical body that tapers slightly from bottom to top, and a flat bottom. Two pulled, lug handles have been applied to the jar just below the flared rim and raised band; the handles are pressed against the churn along their full length. Hand-painted circles of cobalt blue decorate the area where the ends of the handles meet the body of the churn. On one side, between the two handles and below the raised lines, is an impressed mark, "GOODWIN/ &/ WEBSTER/ HARTFORD". To the left of the mark is a large, incised number "4". The churn is accompanied by a wooden, inset lid (.b). The lid is disc-shaped with a cylindrical hole in the center. The bottom of the lid is flat, while the top has a slight indentation toward the central hole. Its diameter varies and is, at some places, narrower than the opening into the churn.
A large, crescent-shaped crack is located on the bottom of the churn. There are at least three chips in the bottom edge of the churn and one chip in the rim. There is crazing over all the salt-glazed surfaces of the churn. There are a few drips of an unknown white substance inside the churn.
