DescriptionLight grey stoneware jug with a cylindrical rim, conical shoulder, cylindrical body, and recessed bottom. An applied handle connects the rim with the shoulder of the jug. The jug is glazed on the interior and exterior with a white glaze, or Bristol-type glaze. The retailer's name is printed in black on the side of the jug opposite the handle, "THE W. W. WALKER CO./ HARTFORD,/ CONN./ 'BOSTON BRANCH GROCERY'". The surface of the jug is irregular in some places where the stoneware below is uneven. An unknown black substance has adhered to the side of the jug to the lower right of the handle; this is possibly a burn mark or hardened tacky substance. Smaller areas of this same substance are found over the lower half of the jug, and possibly on the interior.
NotesOwner Note: Florence S. M. Crofut was the previous owner of this jug as well as related jug, 1974.50.2330, which held cider vinegar, and jug 1974.50.1431, contents unknown. Both of those jugs were delivered from the grocer to the house of Florence S. M. Crofut, so this one may have been as well. (Hunt 2/23/2005)
