DescriptionPair of vases, each made of a blown and cut colorless lead glass container in an elaborate cast bronze mount. The mounts are inseparatable from the glass containers. The rectangular containers each have thick, vertical, bowed sides. The sides and rim of each container have been cut to give them their shape, and a sixteen-pointed star is cut into the bottom. Each container sits inside an elaborate cast bronze mount, which rests on four animal-paw feet. The horizontal and vertical elements of each mount follow the edges of the glass container just below the rim, at all four corners, and at the bottom. The bottom third of each mount is elaborately decorated with a motif found on both of the longer sides, consisting of a griffin on either side of an oval cartouche. Each mount is embellished with many small elements: scrolls and leaves at the corners, a hanging cartouche below the rim, stylized acanthus leaves along some horizontal elements, and shells above some paw feet. Each mount is an elaborate mixture of the later nineteenth-century neo-classical and rococo styles. An unknown light brown substance has adhered to the inside edge of the rim of the glass on each vase. The bronze mount of each vase has tarnished slightly.
